Speaking during an interview with Spice FM on Thursday, April 18, Sifuna stated that he was contented with his position as the county’s senator.
“I have said it publicly. I’m not interested in being the governor of Nairobi. I’m happy with the job that I have been given as the senator of Nairobi,” Sifuna stated.
He reminded his distractors that he was elected to oversight the county, thus, his differences with Sakaja must not be misinterpreted as an attack or early campaigns to unseat the city boss.
“We have not began early campaigns because we just are doing our work. This doesn’t mean I want to be governor. It is not a witch-hunt against anybody for doing an oversight job, which is my duty as senator,” he explained.
At the same time, Sifuna called out Sakaja for constantly skipping Senate summonses to answer to the audit queries and other issues brought against him before the upper house.
“When we summon him and he skips more than seven times, it is the people of Nairobi he is disrespecting every time he fails to appear and also he is impeding my capacity and that of the Senate to oversight,” he said.
Edwin Sifuna, Johnson Sakaja fights
In February, Sifuna clashed with Sakaja before the Senate committee where Sakaja had appeared to answer on Nairobi city’s urban plan, which Sifuna said will affect many residents of Nairobi.
“It cannot be termed as a witch hunt against the governor, we wanted to get clarity on the reports of the auditor general to understand the mismatch and disclaimers in the county’s report since 2020,” he explained.
Why Sakaja skipped Senate summonses
In his defence, Sakaja claimed he had notified the House of his scheduled trip.
He also dismissed skipping the Senate for a year as he had been to the Senate more than 11 times and skipped only two of the 14 according to him.
