Smoking cigarettes can damage the heart, blood vessels and blood cells. The chemicals and tar in cigarettes can increase a person’s risk of atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of plaque in the blood vessels. This buildup limits blood flow and can lead to dangerous blockages.
Smoking also increases the risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD), which occurs when the arteries to the arms and legs start to narrow, restricting blood flow.
2. Erectile Dysfunction
Male sexual function is affected when you smoke. Tobacco causes narrowing of blood vessels all over your body, including those that supply blood to the reproductive organ. Good news is that quitting will make a big difference.
3. Digestive Complications
Smoking damages the lower esophageal sphincter, which is a part of the stomach that is responsible for keeping stomach acids away from the esophagus. This increases the risk of acid reflux, which leads to heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD.
4. Smoking Cigarette Damages Your Lungs
Smoking damages the airways and small air sacs in your lungs. This damage starts soon after someone starts smoking, and lung function continues to worsen as long as the person smokes. Still, it may take years for the problem to become noticeable enough for lung disease to be diagnosed.
Smoke damage in the lungs can lead to serious long-term lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Smoking can also increase the risk of lung infections such as pneumonia and tuberculosis, and it can worsen some existing lung diseases, such as asthma.
