Like most modern-day parents, she went to the doctor for regular prenatal visits. When she and the man in her life found out that they were expecting twins, they were more than ecstatic.
After the initial shock, they realized that they were blessed with a double portion. The doctors also advised them on what special precautions to take, as pregnancies with more than one baby require a little extra care. Other than that, the pregnancy progressed normally, and Kerry was in good health and in good spirits.
At home, they started to make the necessary preparations to welcome their twins into the world. They expected double the joy but also double the trouble.
Getting two sets of everything ready was all in a day’s work. At this stage, they were still waiting to hear what gender the two babies would be. They had no particular preference but just hoped for the twins to be in good health.
Sometimes you go for an ultrasound with the clear expectation of finding out the gender, only for the babies to be very secretive. When there are twins, they can easily hide behind each other, making the discovery of gender a little more complicated.
After some struggle and tossing and turning of the two siblings, doctors revealed that the couple was expecting twin boys. In this case, it was fraternal twins. This simply means that the twins developed from separate fertilized eggs, and they would look genetically distinct from each other.
Although it has already been established that the babies were both boys, fraternal twins can differ in gender. When you’re pregnant while waiting for the birth of your baby or babies, you often speculate about how your children will look. You wonder if they would resemble the husband or the wife.
Sometimes, children even look more like one of their grandparents. When thinking of twins, you wonder if they would look alike. Would they have the same eye color? This guessing game is part of the anticipation as you patiently wait for the nine months to pass by until the actual birth of the children.
Although modern-day ultrasounds have improved vastly in quality, some details are still hidden from the parents. Although there weren’t serious problems with the pregnancy, the boys were born four weeks prematurely at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, England, on July 23, 2006. Leighton weighed in at 6.4 pounds, being the firstborn.
Twenty minutes after him, his brother Caden was born with a slightly higher weight of 6.9 pounds. The boys were healthy, but seconds after Caden was born, the doctors noticed something that left them a little puzzled.
When a doctor notices something in a baby that is different but does not have any medical danger, they may often choose not to make a big fuss about this aspect.
As the thing they discovered was somewhat out of their field of expertise, they decided not to place an emphasis on their surprising discovery. If the parents wanted to, they could consult a specialist doctor.
In the meantime, the parents of Leighton and Caden also noticed the slight yet strange difference between the two boys. However, for them, the most important aspect was that the boys were both healthy. Even after being born prematurely, they had so much to be thankful for that they decided to just focus on these positive things.
The world often tells us to celebrate being different, yet most of the time, being different brings a lot of judgment or ridicule to the individual that has any features that are regarded outside the spectrum of being ordinary.
It is also not only the affected person that has to deal with the opinions of people but also the family that is subject to heartache and pain caused by people’s insensitive reactions.
The mother of these extraordinary twins had some of her own struggles to deal with while growing up. People would say nasty things about her parents that, as she got older, weighed on her confidence.
But in time, she was able to deal with it in her own way. This made her all too conscious about her boys. With one of her parents being English and the other Nigerian, her unique combination of genes resulted in her son Caden looking more like her, and the oldest son Leighton looked more like his father.
Initially, the thing that the doctors discovered wasn’t that obvious. As time passed by, the difference between the two boys became more apparent. By the third month, the difference was so clear that there was no doubt that the doctors discovered that one in a million secret.
When the parents and the two twin boys would go for a walk, people would start pointing and staring, making unsuitable comments. Some people walked up to the couple and directly asked why the babies looked so distinctly different. They did not even believe the parents when they were told that the two boys were twins.
We often expect twins to have similar personalities, but the opposite was true for Leighton and Caden. Although they were still small, one could clearly distinguish two very different personality types. While their distinct personalities continued to develop, so did their physical appearance, changing dramatically.
The Richardson twins, in a sense, became two in a million with their own distinctive genetic codes. They looked vastly different, considering their mother’s mixed background.
Each of her eggs contained a mixture of genes, coding. If twins are not identical, they develop from two separate eggs, therefore having just 50 percent of the same genes in common.
The day the twins were born, Carrie fondly remembered her comment about prenatal scans and information. Doctors can reveal a few facts about the children you’re expecting. They can tell you what gender baby to expect, and most of the time, they’re right.
They can detect some health conditions and deformities before birth, preparing you for the way forward and the difficulties you might have to deal with. What they cannot tell you is some genetic information about your child that will have a profound influence on your lives.
What was the secret the doctors discovered? The father of the boys was white. As time passed, Caden gradually got darker in complexion, while Leighton, in total contrast, grew fairer.
In essence, the twins were born with different skin colors, although they were born to the same mother and father. As they were twins, how can such a strange and extraordinary thing happen? Genetic codes of people born from parents with different ethnic backgrounds allow for the potential of having both light and darker-skinned siblings.
What started out as a slight difference in skin tone ended up being a distinct difference. When the parents told the strangers that the two boys were twins, people would initially think that it was meant as a joke.
When they realized that the parents were serious, they would still shake their heads in disbelief, thinking that the parents are trying to hide some type of secret.
Because of people’s reactions, the parents were concerned about the time when the twins had to go to school. Surely, people would notice the difference between the two boys, and they would most probably feel uncomfortable asking their questions.
Carrie loves her boys equally, irrespective of how different they look. To her, they’re just her boys. They may be a one-in-a-million genetic medical history event, but for her, the most important thing is to raise them well and to protect them against the harsh world. Her hope for her sons is that they will grow up to be men of integrity and wisdom.
