Manchester United picked up a vital 0-0 draw against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Anfield but it very nearly all unravelled for the Red Devils with a few minutes left on the clock.

Diogo Dalot thought he won his side a throw-in late on, replays showed he was indeed correct, but the referee and the linesman awarded a throw-in for the hosts, who were pushing for a winner.

The right-back, understandably, was furious with the decision, United fans were too, and threw his arms in the air and yelled at the referee. Dalot was sent off late on.

Gallagher on decision

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher gave his verdict on the decision and believes that Michael Oliver was right, perhaps unsurprisingly.

“I think it was the right decision to send him off,” Gallagher said. “Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s a good look from Dalot, it’s not the image we want fans to remember from the game.

“Whether you like it or not that’s the remit that the referees have been given for dissent, hence why there are so many yellow cards given for dissent this season.

“It’s difficult because the game has changed from 50 years ago when I used to referee during the black-and-white era of TV. Everything is forensically diagnosed.”

After such a brilliant performance from the Portuguese defender, keeping Luis Diaz quiet as a result, for the 24-year-old to be sent off for such a ridiculous act was exactly that, ridiculous.

United’s luck with decisions

Darwin Nunez booted the ball away after a foul was given against Liverpool yesterday and seemed to disagree, quite strongly, with the referee’s decision and received just the yellow card from Oliver.

Consistency is what fans have been asking for, hence why VAR was seen as such a big step forward for the game itself but it has not worked out that way at all.
