In 1998, Wesley Ira Purkey kidnapped, raped and murdered teenager Jennifer Long and also killed Mary Bales, an 80-year-old polio sufferer.
He lured 16-year-old Jennifer into his truck outside a supermarket, where he assaulted and murdered her. Purkey then gruesomely dismembered her body with a chainsaw and hid her remains in a pond in Kansas, US. However, her body was never found.
Later that year, he brutally killed elderly Mary while installing a kitchen tap at her home. He confessed to killing Mary but only later admitted to murdering Jennifer, which led to his death sentence.
Before his execution by lethal injection on July 16, 2020, he requested a pecan pie as his final meal but asked to have it after the “excruciating” process had been carried out – a moment that naturally never came as he didn’t survive the lethal injection he was prescribed.
Wesley Ira Purkey, 68, was executed for the murder of a woman and the rape and murder of a teenage girl
Purkey, who reportedly suffered from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, was executed at the Federal Correctional Complex in Terre Haute, Indiana at 8.19am local time on Thursday, July 16 2020.
His autopsy revealed that he died a painful death due to the pentobarbital injection, which caused his lungs to fill with fluid, creating a sensation similar to drowning.
Dr Gail Van Norman stated: “It is a virtual medical certainty, that most, if not all, prisoners will experience excruciating suffering, including sensations of drowning and suffocation from (the drug) pentobarbital.”
Purkey reportedly expressed his remorse in his final words: “I deeply regret the pain and suffering I caused to Jennifer’s family.
I am deeply sorry. I deeply regret the pain I caused to my daughter, who I love so very much. This sanitised murder really does not serve no purpose whatsoever,” he said.

Jennifer’s father, who was present at the execution, said: “We took care of today, what we needed to take care of. It has been a long time coming.”
He continued: “He needed to take his last breath he took my daughter’s last breath. And there’s some resolve. There is no closure, and there never will be because I won’t get my daughter back.”
Purkey’s autopsy revealed he suffered “severe bilateral acute pulmonary oedema” and “frothy pulmonary oedema in trachea and main stem bronchi”.
It meant fluid quickly entered his lungs and trachea, causing “a near-drowning” sensation which a medical expert described as “among the most excruciating feelings known to man”. Dr Gail Van Norman, a medical expert, said the flash flood-like filling of Purkey’s lungs could only occur when a person was still alive…CONTINUE READING>>
