In the KwaZulu-Natal Province, a 22 year old suspect made an appearance at the KwaMsane Magistrate Court. He was facing charges of murder and robbery after an attack he had launched on one businessman who was operating in KwaMsane.
The suspect who is named Innocent Gumede was reportedly remanded in police custody when he appeared in court and he will be back in the dock on the 7th of January 2022. Members of the South African Police Services were reported to be carrying out further investigations in a media statement which was issued out yesterday.
A well known 46 year old businessman named Maqumba Mlambo was at his homestead on the 13th of December 2021. In this area, he was running several successful enterprises and at around midnight, three suspects accosted him as they were armed with rifles. An undisclosed amount of cash was robbed from him as well as his firearm before the suspects shot him dead. To flee from the scene, the suspects made use of their getaway vehicle.
Family members of the victim took him to a hospital and upon his admission, he succumbed to injuries. A report was made at the KwaMsane police and a case of robbery and murder was opened fir investigation.
As the members followed up leads regarding this incident, on the 1st of January 2022 at 09:00, there was a report of suspects who were chasing a resident and firing shots.
A team of officers from the Empangeni Tactical Response Team proceeded to the said location and a suspicious looking vehicle was spotted. The members intercepted it and carried out a search where cellphones, a 9mm pistol was found as well as several rounds of ammunition.
The man who was being chased down by the suspect managed to escape unharmed. A case of attempted murder was opened and the firearm was taken for ballistic testing.
It was established from the ballistic test that this suspect was the one who shot dead the businessman. In the media statement, it was stated that the police are expecting to make more arrests soon. The suspect is now faces charges of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery.
This was seen as a perfect way of taking down one habitual criminal. The suspect was not showing any signs of slowing down as he was constantly terrorising residents.
