Despite a lacklustre performance from Chelsea, Graham Potter’s team overcame Aston Villa 2-0 at Villa Park to secure their fourth consecutive victory in all competitions and pile pressure on the under-fire Steven Gerrard.
To Villa’s chagrin, Chelsea took an early lead after just six minutes when Tyrone Mings missed a headed clearance, and Mason Mount was in the right position at the right time to grab onto the loose ball and slide it in from inside the box to give the visitors an early lead.
Kepa Arrizabalaga kept Chelsea ahead at halftime after diverting Danny Ings’ header over the bar.
Raheem Sterling’s looping shot from inside the box hit the bar before halftime.
Mount grabbed his brace with a 25-yard free-kick in the 65th minute to clinch Chelsea’s victory.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
Cristiano Ronaldo had two goals disallowed as Manchester United were held to a 0-0 by Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
The Magpies created more chances in an entertaining first-half with Joelinton hitting the woodwork twice with headers in the space of a few seconds while Callum Wilson had a strong penalty shout when he was tripped by Raphael Varane.
In a strange beginning to the second half, Ronaldo had two goals disallowed in the span of one minute. When the first incident occurred, the right call was made to declare the Portuguese forward offside.
After that, he was given a penalty for stealing the ball from Nick Pope during a free kick taken by the Magpies and placing the ball into an empty goal, but the referee made the contentious decision that the ball was still out of play.
Ten Hag’s disposition toward the referees is not likely to have changed after Sancho was not awarded a penalty despite the fact that it seemed like he was fouled by Sean Longstaff.
Marcus Rashford was brought in for Ronaldo for the last 20 minutes and wasted a late opportunity when he elected to pass to Fred whose shot went wide, while Eddie Howe threw on Joe Willock, Matt Targett and Chris Wood but it failed to generate a goal.
Due to this outcome, United will continue to sit in the fifth position in the Premier League standings, one spot higher than the Magpies.
