De Gea has been a spectacular servant to United, since signing in 2011. The scrawny, donut-stealing Spaniard snapped up from Atletico Madrid blossomed into the best goalkeeper in the world during the late 2010s, winning the club’s Player of the Year award on four separate occasions.
While that is also a rather damning reflection of how bad United have been at times since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, De Gea deserves his flowers. After 12 years and over 500 appearances for the club, the Spaniard undoubtedly leaves as a United legend if this is to be the end of the road.
The fact his goodbye could boil down to his contract expiring because the club didn’t sign off on an extension in the eleventh hour is testament to just how poorly run United have become in the last 15 years or so. Regardless of fan opinion, he deserves a proper send-off, and this is not that.
He’s been far from his best in the last few seasons, though, with errors becoming more frequent and the limitations of his game beginning to show now that Erik ten Hag is trying to turn United into a possession-based side once again that is competing for football’s top honours. As such, United have continually been linked to the likes of Sporting CP’s Diogo Costa and Inter’s Andre Onana, although it’s the latter who now appears more likely to move to Old Trafford.
Onana worked with Ten Hag at Ajax before an unfortunate drugs ban brought his career in the Netherlands to an end. In the time since, though, he’s established himself as one of the most progressive – and equally frightening – goalkeepers to watch at Inter, proving pivotal in their run to the Champions League final.
When he’s not stopping shots, the 27-year-old is doing his very best to put spectators in an early grave with absurd press resistance and nose-bleed-inducing positioning. He is good, though. Really good. But how do his stats compare to United’s current option, and the Portugal international they’ve also been tirelessly linked to?
