Among the diseases or disorders that can cause tongue oedema are:
Allergies:
Allergy to insect bites;
Allergy to medication;
Allergy to food;
Anaphylactic reaction or shock.
Irritant factors and trauma:
Tongue bite;
Burns caused by hot liquids or food;
Dental appliances;
Cigarette smoking;
Alcohol.
Diseases:
Glossitis, a disease caused by bacterial, viral and fungal infections, characterised by swelling of the tongue and change in its colour;
Herpes simplex virus infection
Syphilis;
Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, a rare neurological disease whose main symptoms are orofacial oedema, facial paralysis and cleft tongue;
Acromegaly, a type of hormonal disorder;
Beckwith Wiedemann syndrome, a genetic disease that causes above normal growth, predisposition to tumours and congenital malformations;
Down syndrome;
Hereditary angioedema, a serious genetic disease that causes swelling of the throat and other areas of the body;
Hypothyroidism;
Lymphangioma (malformation of the lymphatic vessels);
Oral neurofibroma (benign tumour);
Vitamin B3 deficiency;
Pernicious anaemia;
Pituitary gland disorder;
Sarcoma (cancer of certain body tissues, such as bones and muscles);
Tongue cancer.
To help in diagnosis, it is important to check when the tongue swelling starts or began, how long it lasts, whether it goes back and forth and whether there is also pain or other symptoms.
In case of tongue swelling one should consult the family doctor, ENT or general practitioner so that the cause of the swelling is properly diagnosed and treated.
