Italian journalist Matteo Moretto explained why the club were asking for much for a 32 year old defender with just one year left on his contract.

El Chelsea debe fichar primero, luego estará más abierto a negociar la venta de César Azpilicueta. Ahora los Blues piden un precio fuera de mercado, entre 9 y 10 millones de euros. Con el tiempo, bajará. @relevo https://t.co/b2QErBUr6t

According to Moretto though, that’s also the reason why that price will fall. Once a replacement is secured, Chelsea’s strategic need to hold on to their versatile defender will reduce, and so will their asking price.
We’re not sure where we find anyone capable of bringing what Azpi brings to this team in terms of quality, versatility and leadership, especially for less than €10m, but if he really wants to go we will have to go into the market and see what we find.
