This is according to well-respected journalist Simon Phillips, who was writing on his Substack.

A lot of the speculation in the media points towards Mason Mount exiting Stamford Bridge this summer, but perhaps there may be a ray of hope for the supporters who desperately want him to stay.

Phillips has explained that Mount isn’t “actively pushing” his potential transfer to Manchester United, despite the fact he’s open to a move to Old Trafford.

It is understood that new Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino is “desperate” to keep the 24-year-old, which is why there’s now internal talks around the club about what would happen if he stays another year.

As it stands, the attacking midfielder is still under contract with Chelsea until the summer of 2024. Are they prepared to eventually lose him on a free transfer, though?

Phillips adds that Chelsea are mulling over the idea of keeping Mount next season and hope Pochettino can help convince him to sign a contract extension.

If United make a big offer and Mount is adamant he wants to join, the Blues are still “very likely” to accept a deal. However, they may let him stay for the final year of his deal if nobody gets near the £70million valuation.

Overall, it’s another fascinating update from Phillips during this crazy Mount saga.

It’s never a good idea to keep an individual completely against their will, but if a sensible conversation can take place with Mount we’re certainly not against him staying next season to work under Pochettino.

We immediately pinpointed Mount as someone that could do well when Pochettino was linked to the Chelsea manager’s job. Of course, there’s been a lot of exit rumours since then.
