Many groups have been referred to as “Group of Death” in the various FIFA World Cup editions. But in actuality, none of those groups lived up to its name like Group E of the 1994 FIFA World Cup. It consisted of Mexico, Republic of Ireland, Italy and Norway.

All four teams had 1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss= 4 points and a goal difference of 0.

Mexico won the group on goals scored (3). Ireland and Italy had identical records but Ireland finished second via the head-to-head rule, having beaten Italy 1-0 when both sides met.

Italy finished third in the group but still qualified as one of the best third-placed teams while Norway finished bottom of the group and failed to progress to the next round.

This was the only time in World Cup history in which all four teams in a group finished with the same number of points and goal difference.
