Erik ten Hag and his players – who won the competition last season – will play Newcastle United in the next stage after the Magpies defeated Manchester City on Wednesday night. United progressed following a routine win over dismal Crystal Palace on Tuesday night at Old Trafford.
Goals from Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro and Anthony Martial settled the scores. United will now lock horns with the side who they beat in the Wembley showpiece last season.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool were among the other big hitters to progress on Wednesday night – shortly before the draw was held – but treble-winning City will play no further part in the competition this campaign. A goal from striker Alexander Isak sent them packing.
