It has been claimed on numerous occasions that Newcastle boss Eddie Howe would love to sign him on loan in the coming weeks – and Whelan has urged the young midfielder to seek a permanent move in order to take an important first step in forging a successful career.

“I don’t see where he’s going with Chelsea,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“The fact that this will be his second loan in two seasons – that tells a story. He’s 21 and in the Scotland side, but not in the Chelsea side – the writing is on the wall.

“He’s not needed at the club. He needs to try and get a permanent move somewhere and get settled at that club.

“That’s the only way you can start forging your career properly and feeling like you belong somewhere.

“It’s very easy to end up just being volleyed by Chelsea every season and going back out on loan every summer.
