Liverpool signed two goalkeepers in August 2001- Chris Kirkland from Coventry City for £6 million and Jerzy Dudek from Feyenoord for £4.8 million.

Despite being the less expensive signing, Dudek soon became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper and in his first season, was nominated for the UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year award, alongside Oliver Kahn and Gianluigi Buffon.

The following season, Dudek helped Liverpool win the League Cup with a spectacular performance against Manchester United in the final.

Dudek is perhaps most remembered for his performance against AC Milan in the dramatic comeback win in the 2004-05 UCL final.

He made a double save against Andriy Shevchenko towards the end of extra time and then saved penalties from Andrea Pirlo and Shevchenko in the shoot-out, using his “dance” tactics to distract his opponents.

From the 2005-06 season on, Dudek lost his first-team spot to new signing Pepe Reina and would only make 12 more appearances for Liverpool before leaving for Real Madrid in 2007. He made a total of 184 appearances for Liverpool.
