The underdog Lions of Chinguetti put up a spirited first-half display, with goalkeeper Babacar Niasse making a spectacular save to deny Burkina Faso the lead.
Despite the Stallions’ dominance after the break, Mauritania’s defense held firm against numerous attacks. A tactical shift by Mauritania, introducing attacking changes, nearly paid off when substitute Amar Sidi Bouna forced a brilliant save from Burkina Faso’s keeper.
However, Hervé Koffi and his defense stood strong.
In the dying moments of the game, Burkina Faso secured a penalty after Nouh El Abd fouled Issa Kaboré, setting the stage for Bertrand Traoré’s redemption.
