The Gunners have said to be keen on Tielemans for almost a year now, but are yet to make an official bid for the 25 year-old. Tielemans is in the final 12 months of his contract at City and there remains no clear indication he is leaning towards extending his stay.

Despite the interest from Mikel Arteta’s side, the Belgium international has featured in all of City’s opening four games of the season. With only two days remaining until the transfer window shuts, a move had looked less likely, until now.

Arsenal midfielder Elneny sustained an injury in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Fulham, despite completing the full match. Elneny had stepped into the Gunners’ midfield after Thomas Partey after the Ghanian picked up a tight right thigh last week.

It remains unclear how long both will be absent, leaving Arsenal short in the middle of the park. Going into Wednesday’s game against Aston Villa, only Granit Xhaka, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Fabio Vieira are the available options to choose from.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal had been focused on signing a new forward, but Elneny’s injury update could force them to recruit a new midfielder. The report states that the Gunners would not attempt to sign a short-term fix and a possible new addition must fit the wider recruitment plan and squad-building strategy.
