The Gunners find themselves needing another midfielder after failing to land another central player early in the summer.

Even with Arsenal’s fine start, it’s likely Edu and Mikel Arteta will dip back into the market to add a midfielder in the winter.

And reports claim they could make another move for Luiz, who faces an uncertain future at Villa Park.

Here we round up all the latest surrounding this potential transfer.

According to The Sun, the Gunners will make a reduced offer worth £15million in the January transfer window.

The report claims Arsenal feel £15million would be a reasonable offer for the midfielder given his contract situation.

That would still represent a small profit for Villa, who signed Luiz for £12.5million three years ago.

Arsenal are said to have made two previous offers for the Villa midfielder.

The Gunners made a rather desperate scramble for a midfielder on deadline day, and made two offers to Villa, who did not want to sell so late in the window, not having enough time to find a replacement.

It’s claimed Arsenal offered up to £23million to sign Luiz, but Villa stood firm.

Luiz’s stance

Luiz is reportedly keen on a move to Arsenal this summer.

According to the aforementioned report from The Sun, the midfielder has a good relationship with Arteta from his Manchester City days.

Crucially, even without keeping the reports in mind, actions speak louder than words, and Luiz is yet to sign a new contract at Villa Park.

The contract situation

As things stand, Luiz is out of contract at Villa in the summer.

Villa are said to have made attempts to extend the Brazilian’s deal, in a bid to keep hold of him, but he has been resistant.

That means Luiz is able to agree a pre-contract agreement with any club outside England from January, and he is on course to become a free agent in the summer.

Villa face a choice between selling the midfielder for a reduced fee in January or losing him for nothing in the summer, providing they can’t agree a new contract in the meantime.
