Carrots are actually just one of the many foods and supplements that contribute to good eye health. As we age, the importance of good nutrition increases for a number of reasons.
The human body needs more vitamins and nutrients to keep it working properly, and it has a harder time digesting and processing the vitamins that we eat in our regular diets.
Since the eyes are probably the most important organ connected to the senses, certain vitamins and nutrients can help protect the eye from age-related diseases such as age-related problems.
According to WebMd, here are foods that can help protect the eyes as you age.
Citrus fruits
Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C, another key antioxidant for the eye. Refreshing sources include lemon, lime, grapefruit, and orange.
Sweet potatoes
Like carrots, sweet potatoes are rich in beta carotene. They are also a good source of the antioxidant vitamin E which help protect the eyes.
Nuts
Nuts like walnuts, pine nuts, hazelnuts, cashew nuts, etc. and seeds like chia seeds, flax seeds, etc. are rich sources of vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids which helps protect the eyes from damage.
Eat whole grains and cereals
Sugars and refined white flours commonly found in breads and cereal may increase your risk of age-related eye diseases. Instead, choose 100 percent whole-grain breads and cereals that have lots of fiber like wheat bread.
Beef
Beef is another good food for eyesight improvement. It’s rich in Zinc, which has been shown to slow the progression of macular degeneration.
Carrots and papaya
Carrot, and papaya and such colourful vegetables and fruits are rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene. Vitamin A has important roles to play in eye health, while beta-carotene is needed by the body to make vitamin A.
