The exact cause of the linea nigra is not known, but it is believed to be related to the increased levels of hormones in the body during pregnancy. Specifically, it is thought to be caused by the hormone melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH), which is produced by the placenta.

MSH stimulates the production of melanin, which is responsible for skin pigmentation. During pregnancy, the body produces more MSH, which leads to an increase in melanin production. This results in the darkening of the skin, including the appearance of the linea nigra.
