The mudslide is said to have occurred following heavy rainfall experienced overnight in the region. Unfortunately, at the time, the whole family was at home.

The family of four, a father aged 35 years, his wife aged 24 years and two children aged 5 and 3 respectively lost their lives in the tragedy.

‘It was reported by members of the public that due to heavy rain throughout the night, mudslides occurred at unknown time of the night and caused death to 4 residents members of the same family at Torokiat Market,” a police report capturing the incident in detail read.

However, at the time of publishing this article, efforts to recover the bodies from the rubble were still ongoing.

The house also appeared to be a shell of its former self with different materials used to construct it having scattered as a result of the damage.

In a separate incident caused by the heavy rains, a bus ferrying 51 passengers was swept away by floods along the Nairobi-Garissa Highway still on Monday night.

According to the Kenyan Red Cross, all the passengers were rescued. Following the heavy rains experienced in the country, Kenyans have been warned to evacuate from areas prone to disasters.

On Tuesday April 9, the government through the National Disaster Operation issued a notice for residents living in low areas of Tana River, Garissa and Lamu counties to evacuate over possible flooding.
