Over the years, these habits have become increasingly common throughout the world and, although some are done unconsciously, they are not always good for staying healthy.

Although they may seem completely harmless at first, in the long run they will influence the appearance of annoying symptoms or serious health problems.

Knowing that many people are not aware of this, in this article we will talk about what not to do after eating. Let’s find out together.

1. Sleep

Lying down after eating or taking a nap are habits that can cause some digestive problems.

Although for many people this is necessary and relaxing, it is very important to bear in mind that it directly affects our digestion.

As a result of the position the body assumes when lying down, the gastric juices do not fully cover the food in the stomach, which in turn is unable to assimilate the nutrients properly.

They can also cause discomfort in the oesophagus as their natural acidity causes reflux and acidity.

2. Smoking

It is no news that smoking has serious consequences for lung and cardiovascular health. What some people don’t know is that the risks are greater if you smoke after a main meal.

This is due to the fact that nicotine combines with the excess oxygen needed for the digestive process, which in turn facilitates the rapid absorption of carcinogens.

3. Eating fruit

Some people think of fruit as a healthy alternative to complete the main meals of the day. It is sweet, versatile and seems like a good alternative to traditional sweets.

However, not everyone knows that fruit should be eaten on an empty stomach, either away from meals or as a snack.

Fruit needs different enzymes to be digested well and contains natural sugars that take longer to be fully absorbed.

So if you eat it on an empty stomach, with no other food to digest, your body will benefit from all its nutrients including fibre and simple sugars which will increase energy.

If, on the other hand, it is eaten after a large meal, its remains will remain in the stomach for longer, causing indigestion, air and other discomfort.

4. Taking a shower

Although taking a shower is relaxing and healthy in the morning, it is not good to take one after eating as it can debilitate the digestive system.

In fact, it increases blood flow to the hands and lower body, decreasing the amount that should go to the stomach.

The result is a deficit in its functions, pain, inflammation and heaviness.

5. Drinking cold water

Drinking cold water during and after meals can cause poor digestion of food.

It causes meals to clump together, making it difficult for nutrients to be absorbed and waste to be separated.

6. Drinking tea

Although tea is a very healthy drink, it is not recommended to drink it with the main meals of the day.

This food interferes with iron absorption due to the presence of a substance, tannic acid, which combines with this mineral and protein.

The result will be an 87% decrease in iron absorption, which can lead to chronic episodes of anaemia.

This nutrient is essential for producing red blood cells in the blood and its deficiency causes symptoms such as:

Chest pain.

Pale skin.

Lassitude and extreme tiredness

Brittle nails.

Lack of appetite

Cold hands and feet.

7. Walking or running

It is wrong to think that exercising after eating is a good way to burn more calories. Although there is no denying that running or walking is a very healthy habit, doing it after eating a large meal may cause indigestion and stomach discomfort.

This exercise should be done at least 30 minutes after finishing eating and, in this case, should last no longer than 10 minutes.

Do you have any of these habits? If so, take note and try to avoid them from now on so that they do not interfere with your health.
