This resistance can be attributed to a variety of factors like:
1. Genetic Mutations.
Some individuals possess genetic mutations that render them less susceptible to HIV infection. The most well-known example is the CCR5-delta 32 mutation, which affects the CCR5 co-receptor on immune cells, preventing the virus from entering and infecting these cells.
2. HIV-Exposed Seronegative (HESN) Individuals.
A subset of individuals known as HIV-Exposed Seronegative (HESN) individuals remain uninfected despite repeated exposure to the virus. The reasons for their resistance are not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, immunological, and behavioral factors.
3. Cellular Resistance Mechanisms.
Some people exhibit natural cellular mechanisms that inhibit HIV replication. These mechanisms may include enhanced production of antiviral proteins or other factors that limit the ability of the virus to establish and spread infection within the body.
4. Immune System Vigilance.
An effective immune response is crucial in controlling HIV infection. Individuals with particularly robust immune systems may be better equipped to recognize and eliminate the virus before it can establish a persistent infection.
5. Viral Coevolution.
