This unusual taste in the mouth can occur because of various health conditions or issues related to oral health.

If this abnormal or bitter taste does not go away in a few days, you must get it checked by a doctor.

Here are some reasons for developing abnormal or bitter taste in the mouth. It consists of health conditions and problems related to general hygiene.

They are:

1. Inflammed gums: One of the reasons for having bitter taste in mouth can be because gum problems and cavities.

In the case of poor oral hygiene, the dental health is compromised which results in number of oral problems such as gum diseases and infections in gums.

This leads to bitter taste in the mouth and foul smell coming out.

The common symptoms of inflammation of gums includes:

a. Sensitive teeth.

b. Bad breath.

c. Bleeding gums.

2. Mouth dryness: Another common reason for bitter taste in mouth can be because of dryness in the mouth.

Many people do not drink sufficient water time to time because of which there is lack of saliva in the mouth.

As a result of this condition, you can have bitter or lingering smell in the mouth. It also causes bad breath from the mouth.

This is very common condition; you can also face this when you wake up in the morning. Hence drinking more water and liquids can eradicate this bitterness in mouth.

But is some cases, dryness can also be caused due to other factors such as:

a. Use of medications.

b. Consumption of tobacco.

3. Acid reflux: One of the reasons for bitterness in mouth can also be because of acid reflux.

Acid reflux is the condition in which the juices travel upwards through the oesophagus. Because of this, it results to foul smell from the mouth and bitter taste in the mouth.

Some common symptoms of acid reflux are:

a. Sore throat.

b. Vomiting.

c. Cough.

d. Bad breath.

e. Nausea.

f. Heartburn.

4. Fungal growth: Fungal growth in the stomach or digestive system causes oral thrush. This happens because of taking antibiotics or infection from some bacteria.

Oral thrush occurs in older adults and infants most of the times because there is lack of care in personal hygiene.

Other than that, people with diabetes and some health disorders may also have fungal growth leading to bitter taste in mouth.

5. Hepatitis B: This is a viral infection that in caused in the liver of the person. Hepatitis B can be a solid reason for having bitter taste in the mouth.

This is because it infects the liver that produces enzymes and bile juices to over produce in the system and cause bitter taste and bad smell.

It is a serious disease that needs to be treated right away to avoid further complications.
