As many as 9 percent of menstruating women will experience bleeding in their private organs after intimacy that’s not linked with their period.
And between 46% and 63% of postmenopausal women will experience dryness, itching, tenderness, or bleeding during or after intercourse as a result of changes in their hormones that affect the female organ tissues.
3 things that make women bleed during intercourse are as follows.
1. STIs and bleeding
Bleeding during intimacy could also be triggered by sexually transmitted infection (STI). Unexpected bleeding either after intercourse or in between your period can be an indication of a sexually transmitted infection. It’s therefore advisable to get it checked out as early as possible to prevent infections like Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea.
2. Pregnancy and bleeding
Early pregnancy can also lead to unexplained bleeding. So, if you notice spotting while having intercourse or between periods, take a pregnancy test immediately.
A pregnancy test is very essential to know the cause of unexplained bleeding during intimacy, this enables you to exclude early pregnancy and know the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy that needs urgent medical attention.
Pregnancy tests can be done at home, but it’s best to get this done by a medical expert so they can take action immediately if need be and rule out any other factor that can lead to bleeding if you’re not pregnant.
3. Contraception and bleeding
Intake of a new pill, missed pills, or a change in contraception could trigger unexpected bleeding, therefore it is a good idea to get it checked out.
If bleeding during intimacy occurs just after a change in the contraceptive method then that can be expected, but if it continues or comes out of the blue, then ensure you get it well checked.
