Impeachment: List Of Ksh 5.7B Properties Gachagua Is Accused Of Acquiring Through His Sons

On Saturday, September 28, several allegations against Gachagua were made public in a nine-point motion which lawmakers are preparing to table on Tuesday in a frantic bid to oust the Deputy President.

Among the allegations made against Gachagua in the 40-page impeachment motion, part of which was obtained and reviewed by Kenyans.co.ke, was accruing assets worth Ksh5.7 billion in the two years he has been in office as President William Ruto’s number two.

On paper, a Kenyan deputy president is expected to earn slightly over nKsh12 million per year. The impeachment motion has, therefore, brought up the question of how Gachagua could expand his wealth to the tune of billions in such a short time.

Kenyans.co.ke has since accessed a document detailing the alleged properties owned by Gachagua, which includes several high-end hotels along the Kenyan coast.

The properties include Tree Tops Hotel, Outspan Hotel from Aberdare Safari Hotels, Olive Gardens Hotel, and Vipingo Beach Resort in Kilifi County among others.

According to the document, Gachagua is said to have acquired the properties  through close family members and his sons Kevin Rigathi Gachagua, and Keith Ikinu Rigathi.

Other allegations against the deputy president set to be tabled include violating the National Cohesion and Integration Act, the Anticorruption and Economic Crimes Act, the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act, the Penal Code, and the Leadership and Integrity Act.

After the High Court on Monday declined to give interim orders to stop the presentation of the impeachment motion against Gachagua, the Deputy President now faces a genuine threat of losing his seat two years since he was sworn in alongside Ruto.

What Gachagua said: During an interview with one of the local radio stations in Central Kenya, Gachagua denied allegations that he demanded Ksh8 billion as a compensation package from President William Ruto.

According to the DP, he could have easily been bought by Ruto’s rivals for a hefty price if his key motivation was money.
