The Tana Forum, a leading African platform on peace and security matters, officially welcomed Kenyatta as a board member in March 2024. The announcement, made on September 16, marks a strategic move as Kenyatta brings his vast expertise and diplomatic experience to the organisation.

The Forum brings together leaders from diverse sectors to craft African-led solutions for security challenges facing the continent.

Uhuru’s appointment is seen as a crucial addition to the Forum’s leadership. His role will involve providing strategic oversight and shaping the broad agenda for the Forum’s annual discussions, scheduled to take place in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, from October 25-27, 2024. The forum will centre on the theme “Africa in an Evolving Global Order.”

This new position points to Uhuru’s ongoing commitment to pan-Africanism and the development of peace and security across Africa. Having served as President of Kenya for two terms, Uhuru’s leadership extended beyond Kenya’s borders. His experience will now be instrumental in guiding Tana Forum’s mission to push African leadership to take ownership of security solutions.

The Tana Forum, chaired by former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, comprises a lineup of influential African leaders. Uhuru will serve alongside notable figures, including former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, former Malawian President Joyce Banda, and Professor Patrick Lumumba.

The collective expertise of the board members is expected to advance the Forum’s mission, ensuring African peace and security initiatives remain a priority.

Uhuru’s new role follows his leadership of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for South Africa’s 2024 General Elections. Appointed by the African Union Commission, Kenyatta led a team of 60 election experts, observers, and civil society representatives to oversee the election process.

The mission, which worked closely with South African state authorities, political parties, and civil society, released its initial findings on May 31, 2024, affirming the democratic process.

Kenyatta’s involvement in such significant diplomatic assignments has further cemented his reputation as a statesman capable of handling complex political environments.
