Both regular and extra time between the teams finished with a 1-1 tie. Japan’s Daizen Maeda scored in the 43rd minute, and Croatia’s Ivan Perisic scored in the 55th minute.
Croatia won the shootout 3-1 after neither side scored in extra time.
Croatia will now await the winner of the quarterfinal encounter between Brazil and South Korea, which is set to take place later tonight.
