With the fact that Thomas Tuchel needed to replace Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen this summer – there was alot of speculation about who the club could manage to sign this summer
That led to speculation that Koulibaly was the man that the club wanted – and after a few months of speculation – they managed to bring the powerhouse to the Premier League in a deal worth £40 million
Over the past few seasons – Koulibaly has proven himself to be one of the best central defenders in the game and the only reason that Chelsea managed to complete a transfer deal is because the big man was out of contract at the end of next season and the Italians needed to sell
The Senegalese defender made his first outing in Chelsea colours in the pre-season defeat to Arsenal, with his performance the main positive from a frustrating evening, and Di Matteo believes that he will strengthen the Blues this season.
He told the club website: ‘Being Italian, I watch Italian football quite a lot and with regards to Koulibaly, he’s a top-class player.
‘He will bring physicality, which you need in the Premier League, but also he has a lot of technical ability and he has the tactical awareness that you see from the Italian sides in Serie A.
‘So I think he be a good signing for Chelsea. I feel like we are getting a top player who is in the prime of his career, so I can only see positive things.’
