The song, Essence, which was released in 2020, has been referred to as the “Song of the summer”. It stole the hearts of listeners including celebrities far and wide, thereby putting the vocalists, Wizkid and Tems, at the fore front of the entertainment industry.
The song also got the attention of American singer, Justin Bieber, who did a remix with the two music stars, which put the song in the lime light even more.
Due to the international recognition that song gave Tems, she was able to gain the admiration internationally. Tems who was an industry new comer, was noticed by American singer and rapper, Drake who featured her on his album.
The song became the first African song to become a certified Platinum in the United States.
Wizkid won the award for Best Collaboration at the 2021 Soul Train Music Awards. He also won the Best African Music Act and The Best International Act at the 2021 Mobo Awards.
He, along side his colleague, have taken afro beat global, which is a plus to the Nigerian music industry.
