There can be variations in the population, just as each person has their own body odour. But there is also the smell of vaginal discharge, the fluid secreted by the walls of the vagina, whose function is to keep it clean and moisturised.
To do this, it has the help of the vaginal flora: a group of bacteria that protects against possible infections and maintains the pH of the vaginal mucosa.
Natural factors that alter the odour of vaginal discharge
The odour of vaginal discharge can vary due to different natural factors, but this does not mean that something is wrong. That is, as long as the odour is not unpleasant. Some of these normal situations are:
Menstruation
There can be variations in the odour of discharge throughout the menstrual cycle. Differences in the levels of hormones released at each moment have a lot to do with it. But, in addition, menstruation has a characteristic odour in each woman, coming from the substances that are expelled: blood, dead cells, endometrial tissue?
Sexual intercourse
It is normal to notice a different smell after intercourse, due to the exchange of fluids between partners.
Pregnancy
It is true that hormones can cause an increase in vaginal secretions and in the intensity of vaginal odour, but there is another contingency that also has an influence: during pregnancy, women are particularly sensitive to odours.
Menopause
In the menopause, hormones decrease, specifically oestrogens, and as their levels decrease, the pattern of discharge, the pH and the natural flora of the vagina are altere, the gynaecologist points out. For this reason, it is common for women at this stage to change the smell and secretion of their discharge and experience greater dryness.
Diet
Some foods such as garlic, onions or asparagus, and certain drugs, can temporarily modify the smell of the discharge.
