According to healthline, The public may not be able to see underwear, but it IS there, and with the wrong type or fit, it can cause a woman various infections and discomforts. In order to avoid irritation and infection, there are a few rules of thumb every woman should follow when purchasing underwear.

First and foremost, it’s important to buy the right fit. Too small or too large of underwear can cause an array of issues. Underwear that is too small can pinch, bunch, or even cut into the skin leading to infections like a yeast infection or urinary tract infection (UTI).

Meanwhile, underwear that is too large can be just as uncomfortable and cause skin irritation from constant sliding fabric. As such, be sure to try on any underwear before purchasing in order to ensure the fit is just right. Make sure there is enough room for two fingers to fit in the waistband for a snug, but not overly tight, fit.

Second, look for the right fabric. Every woman should know that not all fabrics are created equal for underwear, so be sure to do your research. Believe it or not, 90 percent of skin’s exposure problems stem from the fabric alone, according to the Skin Health Alliance.

Your best bet is to look for cotton underwear, as it tends to be the most breathable fabric. This is especially important if you’re going to be wearing tight pants or jeans. Not to mention, cotton is also hypo-allergenic, so it won’t cause breakouts or skin irritation.

Next, keep an eye out for visible signs of wear and tear. If you notice there are holes from stretching or fading from washed, it too is a sign you should replace your underwear. Wearing worn-out underwear can lead to uncomfortable chafing and even infections. So, be sure to replace it when you start to notice signs of the fabric wearing down.
