Jadon Sancho open the scoring with less than 20 minutes on the clock, Ronaldo netted his first goal of the season shortly before half-time, converting an effort from the penalty spot. It ensured United went into the half-time interval firmly in control.
Manchester United continued to dominate proceedings after half-time but did so without threatening the Sheriff goal too much. They enjoyed plenty of possession but clear-cut chances were at a premium.
Nevertheless, it was a professional and measured away performance from United, ensuring they secured a first win of their Group E campaign with minimal fuss. And for Ronaldo, who kept his place in the starting line-up at the expense of the injured Marcus Rashford, it was a solid night’s work.
“Happy to score and help the team win,” Ronaldo posted on his Instagram page. “Three important points! Well done, lads.”
Manager Erik ten Hag made five changes to the side that was beaten 1-0 by Real Sociedad last time out, choosing to revert back to almost the exact same line-up that had beaten Arsenal in their most recent Premier League fixture.
The only difference was that Ronaldo started in place of Rashford, who was left at home because of a muscle problem. Reflecting on Ronaldo’s performance, Ten Hag, speaking in his post-match press conference, said: “He’s totally committed to this project, totally committed to this team, totally involved, he also has connections that are coming around him and he is constructing connections so I’m happy with that.”
