Dejan Kulusevski’s deflected cross found Sarr at the back post four minutes into the second half, and Spurs’ victory was sealed when Martinez flicked in Ben Davies’ shot late on.

But both teams will be left wondering how there weren’t more goals on such an exciting evening of football.

Guglielmo Vicario, the new Spurs goalkeeper, earned his first Premier League clean sheet with outstanding saves in both halves, denying Marcus Rashford and then Casemiro, though he was relieved when Antony smacked the post seconds after Sarr’s breakthrough.
