Whether it is failing to live up to expectations due to a high fee, or performances levels simply not being good enough, several massive deals did not actually work out for the best. We have highlighted some of them.

1. Jack Grealish – Manchester City

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City signed Jack Grealish from Aston Villa for a British record price in the summer. ‘Super Jack’ was spectacular as captain of Aston Villa, and last two season his final third output finally rose to a level that gave Manchester City the confidence to splurge the cash on him.

In spite of this, he’s had a bumpy ride since joining the Etihad in the summer. Guardiola’s City team is notoriously difficult to adapt to, as Rodri and Joao Cancelo can attest, but Grealish hasn’t looked like a £100 million signing just yet.

2. Romelu Lukaku – Chelsea

With three goals in his first three Premier League games under Thomas Tuchel’s tutelage, he started the season well. But since his October injury, we only saw the shadow of one of Europe’s most terrifying and expensive strikers.

4. Jadon Sancho – Manchester United

5. Emiliano Buendia – Aston Villa

Aston Villa signed Emiliano Buendia from Norwich City in their attempt to replace Jack Grealish last summer.
