Albeit, the superstar already has a global recognition prior to the release of the album, in the year 2021, he still attained outstanding heights that posterity will never forget about so quickly. In the year 2021, he took Afrobeat to a new level and raised the bar very high for the next generation.
Wizkid had a fruitful run in 2021 as he attained numerous feats which at some point became very tedious to keep track of. However, we shall briefly look at the top biggest achievements of the superstar from Ojuelegba in the year 2021.
1. In October 2021, the superstar from Ojuelegba became the first Nigerian Artiste to ever get a RIAA Platinum Certification in the United States of America. The U.S.A has the biggest music industry in the world and it is regarded as the heartbeat of modern music. Hence, it is not an easy task for a Nigerian Song to get a Platinum Certification in the music power house.
In fact, no one has ever achieved this until Wizkid broke the spell with his summer hit ‘Essence’ in October. Currently, the song is on its way to get a 2x Platinum certification by RIAA.
2. Another history was made by Wizkid in 2021, as he sold out the famous London o2 Arena of over 20, 000 capacity within 12 minutes. To sell out London o2 Arena is not a child’s play, talk less of selling it out within 12 minutes which is one of the quickest time in the history of the London o2 Arena.
Wizkid did not stop at this; he went ahead to fix another date in o2 Arena for some of his fans who couldn’t get tickets for the first date. To his greatest surprise, the second date was also sold out within minutes. Wizkid sold out o2 Arena three times consecutively which has never been done by any African Artiste.
3. Double Grammy nominations: One of the biggest things that happened to Wizkid’s music career in 2021 is bagging two Grammy nominations. His summer hit song ‘Essence’ featuring Tems got a Grammy Nomination in the category of ‘Global Music Performance’ while his Album, Made In Lagos got nominated in the category of ‘Global Music Album’.
4. In 2021, Wizkid surpassed Fela’s record of the longest charting album by a Nigerian Artiste on the Billboard 200 Charts. His album ‘Made In Lagos’ surpassed Fela Kuti’s ‘The Best of Black President’ as the album with the longest run on the Billboard World Music Albums Chart.
5. In 2021, Wizkid cracked the Billboard Hot 100 Chart with his summer hit song ‘Essence’ featuring Tems and Justin Bieber. The song sprung up as high as number 9 on the Billboard Hot 200 Chart. This, as well, has never been achieved by any other Nigerian Artiste in history.
These are arguably the top biggest achievements of Wizkid in 2021. There are many other notable achievements he had in 2021 but the ones above are the most remarkable and outstanding of them all.
