The legislators also proposed a halt in the forced return of migrants seeking to flee Haiti even as anarchy intensifies.
In its proposal, Congress called for stronger control of the Florida ports which the United Nations claimed is the route used to traffick firearms to gangs.
A meeting was also convened with human rights advocates and Haitian organizations to discuss strategies for halting deportations and potentially putting an end to the trafficking of firearms.
“We have to do everything we can as Americans to not continue to support the gangs by giving them the ammunition they need to terrorize the Haitian people,” noted a US lawmaker.
A call to unblock the Ksh39 billion capitation to fund Kenya’s mission to Haiti was made. Kenya’s mission to Haiti was put on hold awaiting the completion of the transition process.
However, reports suggest that Haitians are quite worried about Kenya’s mission as they claim such missions left behind devastating destructions.
The latest development comes a fortnight after Haiti’s most fierce gang leader Jimmy Chérizier, alias “Barbecue,” sent a stern warning to Kenya ahead of deployment.
While opposing the mission, Barbecue termed Kenya’s police officers as invaders and vowed to fight them back.
According to him, the officers were coming to interfere with Haiti’s independence and thus he would consider them as aggressors.
“We will consider them as invaders and we do not have to collaborate with any invaders that have come to walk over our independence,” Barbecue stated.
