In a press statement, State House cited that, “the reporting in the media is largely anchored on the auditor general’s audit report that focused on housing projects that were designed and launched well before President Ruto assumed office in 2022.”

In the article refuted by the State House, Daily Nation claimed that the Boma Yangu initiative failed to gain traction and that only 30,000 Kenyans are saving to own houses through it.

In contrast, State House noted as of August 6, 2024 there were 531,943 Kenyans saving over Ksh 2.26 billion under the Boma Yangu Initiative.

“Since September 2022, 103,000 affordable housing units have been launched and are in various stages of construction accross the country directly and indirectly creating 160,000 jobs for the Kenyan people,” the office of the Government spokesman observed.

According to the statement released by the Office of the President, the uptake for units under AHP is exceptionally high. The Government demolished 39 units of old houses in Park Road and replaced them with 1,379 affordable units, all of which sold out within 90 days.

“When half of the 1,370 affordable units at Park Road were offered to members of the public, over 33,000 Kenyans paid deposits of at least 10 per cent,” the statement asserted adding that individuals who missed out are waiting for the upcoming AHP units.

Via the press release, State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed noted that the housing projects mentioned in the article were not in any way related to the Affordable Housing Project (AHP) initiated by the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The statement further clarified that the Affordable Housing Program was designed differently from the previous housing programs cited in the article.

The Affordable Housing Program is a key pillar enshrined in the Kenya Kwanza manifesto that seeks to improve accessibility to decent housing.

Further, the statement clarified that the Kenya Development Corporation Housing units mentioned in the Nation’s article does not fall under the Affordable Housing Program. “It is a housing investment scheme under the State Corporation.”
