Hi, I’m Lachlan Brown, the founder of Hack Spirit and a mindfulness and Buddhism expert. I believe in the power of positivity and the importance of starting your day off right.

In the next 30 days, I challenge you to integrate these 8 simple practices into your mornings. They’re not only designed to make your days brighter but also to transform you into a happier person.

Let’s dive in.

1) Begin with gratitude

When it comes to cultivating happiness, gratitude plays a crucial role. It’s the first step to a happier you, and it begins the moment you wake up.

In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to overlook the simple things. We often get so caught up in our daily routines that we forget to appreciate what we have.

But I’m here to tell you that expressing gratitude every morning can be a game-changer. By acknowledging the good in your life, you’re setting the tone for a positive day.

So, how do you incorporate gratitude into your morning routine?

Well, it’s as simple as thinking of three things you’re grateful for each morning. These could be as grand as the love of your family or as small as the warmth of your morning coffee.

This practice of mindfulness allows you to start your day with a positive mindset, and over time, can significantly improve your overall happiness.

But remember, consistency is key. So make it a point to practice gratitude every single day for the next 30 days.

2) Meditate for clarity

Meditation is another essential practice I swear by, and it’s not as daunting as it may seem. You don’t need to be a yoga guru or a Zen master to reap the benefits of this powerful practice.

In fact, just a few minutes of focused breathing every morning can significantly impact your day. It helps you cultivate mindfulness, reduces stress, and allows you to start your day with a peaceful mind.

When I first started practicing meditation, I was surprised by the sense of calm it brought into my life. Starting my day with meditation allowed me to approach challenges with a clear mind and a calm demeanor.

As the renowned mindfulness expert Jon Kabat-Zinn once said, “Mindfulness is a way of befriending ourselves and our experience.”

And what better way to befriend ourselves than by dedicating a few minutes each morning to just being present?

Give it a try for the next 30 days. You might be surprised by the transformative power meditation can have on your happiness.

3) Let go of yesterday

This is a tough one, but incredibly important. One of the fundamental teachings of Buddhism is the impermanence of everything, including our experiences and emotions.

We often carry the weight of yesterday’s problems into a brand new day. That argument you had, that mistake you made, or that opportunity you missed – they have no place in today.

Every morning, take a moment to consciously let go of the burdens from yesterday. Remind yourself that today is a new day, untainted by the past. You have the power to shape this day into whatever you want it to be.

Buddhist teachings emphasize the importance of living in the present moment. Yesterday is gone, and tomorrow is not promised. All we truly have is the here and now.

It’s not easy, but practicing this for the next 30 days can drastically improve your mental well-being and happiness.

4) Prioritize mindfulness over mindlessness

How many of us start our day by reaching for our phones and mindlessly scrolling through social media? It’s an easy habit to fall into, but it’s not conducive to starting the day on a positive note.

Instead, try to start your day with mindfulness. This means being fully present and engaged in whatever you’re doing, whether it’s drinking your morning coffee or brushing your teeth.

Mindfulness encourages us to savor each moment and find joy in the simple things. It also allows us to tune into our emotions and better manage them.

Over the next 30 days, try swapping out mindless scrolling for mindful moments. Instead of checking your phone first thing in the morning, take a few minutes to sit quietly and tune into how you’re feeling.

It might feel uncomfortable at first, but with practice, you’ll start noticing a significant change in your mindset and overall happiness.

It’s not about perfection but progression. Take it one day at a time and see where it leads you.

5) Practice compassion

Compassion, both for ourselves and others, is a cornerstone of happiness. It’s also a fundamental principle in Buddhism, something I delve deeply into in my book, Hidden Secrets of Buddhism: How To Live With Maximum Impact and Minimum Ego.

Each morning, take a moment to set your intention for the day. Make it a point to bring compassion into your interactions, both with yourself and the people you encounter.

Whether it’s offering a kind word to a colleague or showing patience with yourself when things don’t go as planned, every act of compassion contributes to your overall happiness.

Compassion allows us to see beyond our ego and connect on a more profound level. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.

Over the next 30 days, make compassion a priority and see how it enriches your life.

6) Embrace imperfection

In our quest for happiness, we often get caught up in the idea of perfection. We strive for the perfect job, the perfect relationship, the perfect life. But this chase for perfection can often leave us feeling inadequate and unhappy.

Mindfulness and Buddhist teachings remind us of the beauty and inevitability of imperfection. The Japanese concept of ‘Wabi-Sabi’, deeply associated with Zen Buddhism, celebrates beauty in what’s natural, flaws and all.

Every morning, remind yourself that it’s okay to be imperfect. Accept your flaws and limitations. Recognize that they don’t define you, but add to your uniqueness.

Striving for constant perfection can be mentally exhausting. Instead, strive for progress and personal growth.

Over the next 30 days, practice embracing your imperfections each morning.

It’s a liberating experience that can significantly impact your overall happiness and self-acceptance. You are enough just as you are.

7) Start with self-care

Self-care is not selfish; it’s necessary. However, it’s often the first thing we neglect when life gets busy.

Taking care of our physical, emotional, and mental health is crucial for our overall happiness. It’s about honoring your needs and taking time to replenish your energy.

As the famous Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, once said, “To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.”

Each morning, take a few moments for self-care. This could be anything from a short jog, a nutritious breakfast, or even a few moments of quiet reflection. Whatever it is, ensure it’s something that nourishes your body and mind.

Over the next 30 days, make self-care a non-negotiable part of your morning routine. Your future self will thank you for it.

8) Embrace the silence

In our noisy, fast-paced world, silence has become something we often avoid. We fill every moment with noise—music, podcasts, TV shows—anything to avoid the discomfort of silence.

But here’s a counterintuitive piece of advice: embrace the silence. Mindfulness teaches us the value of stillness and quiet. In silence, we become more aware of our thoughts and feelings. It’s a space where we can tune into our inner self and practice self-reflection.

Each morning, try to spend a few minutes in complete silence. Just sit quietly with your thoughts. It might be challenging at first, but with time you’ll start to appreciate these moments of quiet in your day.

Over the next 30 days, make silence a part of your morning routine. You may discover that these quiet moments are when you feel most connected to yourself and your journey towards happiness.

And there you have it—8 simple practices to kickstart your journey towards becoming a happier person. Remember, the key is consistency. Give these practices a try for the next 30 days, and you might be surprised by the positive changes in your life.

Of course, this is just the start. There’s so much more to explore when it comes to mindfulness and Buddhism’s impact on our happiness.
