6. Raphael Varane

United’s signing of Varane was intended to be a game-changer, elevating them to a new level. But he struggled through injury issues in his first season, and United had their worst Premier League season ever (allowing 57 goals in 38 games). There is still hope for the centre-back to turn things around at Old Trafford and become a crucial player for Erik ten Hag after winning three La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues with Real Madrid.

5. Victor Valdes

After turning down a new contract offer from Barcelona in January 2015, Valdes signed a free agent contract with United. After only two Premier League appearances for the Red Devils, the goalkeeper was locked out by Louis van Gaal after refusing to play in an Under-21 match. In 2016, he joined Middlesbrough on a free transfer after being denied even a locker in the Carrington locker room.

4. Angel Di Maria

The Argentine winger gained widespread acclaim after a string of outstanding performances for Real Madrid in the 2013–14 season culminated in a man-of-the-match showing in the Champions League final. He subsequently signed with Manchester United. Di Maria, who was handed the number 7 jersey, got off to a strong start in his Old Trafford career. In a game against Leicester City, he scored a fantastic chipped stunner, which was his finest goal.

3. David de Gea

After a successful stint with Atletico Madrid, De Gea was brought to Old Trafford in 2011 to replace Edwin van der Sar, but he initially failed to live up to expectations. After a slow start, the Spanish international went on to become one of the top goalkeepers in the world and a four-time winner of United’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award. However, his ability to adjust to Ten Hag’s playstyle is in question, and he has made some egregious gaffes in recent seasons.

2. Laurie Cunningham

A native of England, Cunningham made history by becoming the club’s first player from that country. Upon loaning to Old Trafford, the winger made history by being the first player in football history to suit up for both Real Madrid and Manchester United. The Red Devils only used him in five games. In 1979, Cunningham moved to Los Blancos from West Brom, an English club. He made 44 games for the Spanish powerhouse, Real Madrid, and helped them win the La Liga and Copa del Rey. His tragic death in a car crash in 1989 was a major loss to the world.
