According to different information about the transfer, Real Madrid has been making plans to sign Kylian Mbappe during the summer transfer, and a deal has been prepared before the end of this season’s UEFA Champions League.

However, to the surprise of all football fans, Mbappe turned down the offer and signed another contract with PSG.

However, this isn’t the first time this will happen. Earlier in 2021, Real Madrid had a €160 million bid for Kylian Mbappe when he was in the final year of his contract, but PSG turned down the offer.

Then, Carlo Ancelotti decided to spend the money on David Alaba and Eduardo Camavinga; signing a defender and a midfielder respectively.

Before making attempts to sign Mbappe, Real Madrid has made several attempts to sign some top football players over the years, but the attempt ended up failing.

Hence, we will be looking at five (5) other players who Real Madrid attempted to sign, but at the end of the day, Real Madrid wasn’t able to sign them.

1. Ronaldinho

In the early 2000s, Real Madrid wanted to sign Ronaldinho when the Brazilian was available from PSG; however, based on the brand the club was trying to build then, rumors had it that the deal was canceled because of Ronaldinho’s look.

2. Francesco Totti

Totti is one of the football legends who spent their entire football career playing for a single club. Totti played for AS Roma throughout his football career, and he was known to be one of the best players the club ever had.

Real Madrid attempted to sign him in 2003, but he pondered on the deal, and according to a press statement he released, he said he never planned to leave Roma and wasn’t ready to sign for another Italian side out of respect for people.

3. Steven Gerard

In 2010, Jose Mourinho wanted to sign Gerard when he was at Chelsea, and Real Madrid was also planning the same thing. However, none of the two teams were able to sign Gerard from Liverpool.

4. Neymar

In 2013, Real Madrid was close to signing Neymar, however, reports had it that the Brazilian was thought to always prefer a move to Barcelona when the time came to leave Santos; thus, Real Madrid went ahead to sign another player instead.

5. Robert Lewandowski

So, at different times, Real Madrid has attempted to sign all of these six (6) players, but none of it was successful.
