Upon returning to north London from the Brazil FA in the summer of 2019, the former midfielder was appointed as a technical director.

And following Friday’s announcement, the 44-year-old is celebrating a promotion after being installed as the club’s first-ever sporting director.

Although, it would appear that some Gunners supporters on Twitter felt that had been Edu’s job title for the past three years with @Deb_236 , in particular, brilliantly summing the general feeling amongst the fanbase by replying: “Congratulations Edu… But what was he before?”

In truth, whilst Edu has now assumed overall responsibility for all Arsenal academy activities including working together with Per Mertesacker to strengthen the integration between the men’s first team and academy, his existing responsibilities across men’s and women’s football are still in place.

This means the Brazilian is expected to be working closely with Mikel Arteta ahead of the January transfer window and the Arsenal manager has already suggested that they could be active amid interest in Palmeiras midfielder Danilo and continued links to Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhalo Mudryk.

“Of course, we can improve the team, we will always be looking to do that as a club,” the Spaniard told reporters. “This window is unpredictable, especially with the World Cup in the middle.

We will have a look and will try to make the squad stronger. We will be active because you don’t know what will happen in the World Cup, touch wood, everyone will be ok.”

Now, despite the announcement regarding Edu’s promotion having little, to any, impact on whatever plans are in place for January, it has not stopped many Gunners supporters from getting excited about the prospect of one or two deals being completed to bolster the first-team squad.

@Az_afc1 said: “Big January ahead of you mister”, @_gyesi said: “Deserved. Now announce Mudryk”, @TweetsOfTunde had an incentive for Edu: “Sign Endrick and you will become Senior Sporting Director” and @magcypher88 said: “Couldn’t have come at a better time. Now get those January transfers in to bolster the squad.”

Alongside an image of Mudryk and Danilo, @Maosimao2 tweeted: “We have no option but to sign these players in January!!”, to which @omaxri agreed: “Deserved.

Now, let’s go for Mudryk & Danilo” and @Gunner9Lee said: “Well deserved please I hope this gives him more power when it comes to transfers in January we need to push on on two players at least to come into the starting 11 and take us to the next level. Please Arsenal learn from last January we need to strengthen.”
