One of the greatest coaches in sports history, Jose Mourinho has led Porto and Inter Milan to Champions League victories as well as winning league championships in Portugal, England, and Spain.

During his long managerial career, Mourinho has trained several excellent players and here, we take a look five finest signings he has made so far.

7. Wesley Sneijder (from Real Madrid to Inter in 2009).

The Dutch midfield maestro, who joined Inter from Real Madrid at the beginning of the season, was crucial to the team’s illustrious treble run in 2009–10. Sneijder, who had previously played just a little role in the Spanish capital, rose to prominence during that season and was perhaps the most important player in the world.

6. Ricardo Carvalho (Porto to Chelsea)

Despite being one of the greatest defenders in the league in 2004, Ricardo Carvalho may not get the credit he deserves for his role in Chelsea’s rise to prominence that year. His influence on Mourinho was so great that in 2010 when he transferred to Real Madrid, he took him with him.

5. Petr Cech ( Rennes to Chelsea)

A top Premier League goalkeeper. Cech earned the Golden Glove in his debut season at Chelsea, allowing a record-low 15 goals. The famous goalkeeper made 195 games under Mourinho and won a third league title.

After Mourinho left, Cech won the 2011-12 Champions League by beating Bayern Munich and saving three penalties.

4. Diego Costa – From Atletico Madrid to Chelsea (2014)

Diego Costa was one of Europe’s top strikers when Mourinho signed him to Chelsea in 2014. Costa’s debut season with Chelsea saw him score 21 goals and win the Premier League and League Cup.

He won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2017 before falling out with Antonio Conte and rejoining Atleti.

3. Ashley Cole (Arsenal to Chelsea, 2006, £ 5 million + William Gallas)

Cole exchanged North London for the west in a deal that sent William Gallas the other way. Cole’s defensive ability and longevity were only fully appreciated until his retirement, but this signing created the groundwork for Chelsea’s success afterwards.

2. Samuel Eto’o (Barcelona to Inter Milan) – Barca paid Inter £40m plus Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Mourinho didn’t want to lose Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but he never imagined Samuel Eto’o would have such an influence at Inter, winning the treble in his first season. Eto’o scored 16 goals on the left and 37 the next season. Portuguese signed brilliantly.

1. Didier Drogba (Marseille to Chelsea, 2004)

Drogba scored 157 goals in 341 games with Chelsea, including the last-minute equalizer in the 2012 Champions League final. Drogba’s winning passion and never-say-die attitude reflect Mourinho’s in the dugout. Four Premier League titles, a Champions League title, and domestic trophies.
