Masjid al-Haram, also regarded as the Great Mosque of Mecca, is a mosque located in Saudi Arabia. Regarded as the most holy place in Islam, Masjid is a place of pilgrimage in the Hajj, which every Muslim must do at least once in their lives if able, and is also the main phase for the Umrah, the lesser pilgrimage that can be no any time of the year. The rites of both pilgrimages include circumambulating the Kaaba within the mosque.
The mosque, currently regarded as the largest mosque and the eighth largest building in the world, also includes other prominent places, including the Black Stone, the Zamzam Well, Maqam Ibrahim, and the hills of Safa and Marwa.
2. Masjid an-Nabawi
Masjid an-Nabawi is a mosque founded and built by the Islamic prophet Muhammad, located in the city of Medina in the Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia.
The mosque was one of the first mosques built by Muhammad and is now one of the largest mosques in the world. It is the second holiest place in Islam, after the Great Mosque in Mecca. The mosque is also the resting site of Prophet Muhammad and his two companions, Abu Bakr and Umar.
3. Al-Aqsa Mosque
Al-Aqsa Mosque, also regarded as the Al-Qibli Mosque, is the third holiest place in Islam. Located within the Old City of Jerusalem, a country in the Asian continent, the mosque was built on top of the Temple Mount, several decades after the death of Prophet Muhammad.
Muslims are of the belief that the Islamic Prophet Muhammad was journeyed from the Great Mosque of Mecca to this destination during the Night Journey.
Islamic tradition holds that Muhammad led prayers towards this place until the sixteenth or seventeenth month after his migration from Mecca to Medina, when Allah directed him to instead turn towards the Kaaba in Mecca.
4. Great Mosque of Djenné
Located in the city of Djenné, Mali, the Great Mosque of Djenné is an adobe Islamic building considered as one of the holiest places in Islam and one of Africa’s most famous buildings. The first mosque on the site was built around the thirteenth century, but the current structure dates back from 1907.
5. Imam Ali Shrine
Regarded as one of the holiest place in Islam, the Sanctuary of Iman Ali is a mosque located in Najaf, Iraq. According to the Shia Muslims’ belief, the mosque is home to the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib, prophet Muhammad’s cousin who later became his son-in-law.
The Shias consider as their first Imam, and the Sunnis regard him as the fourth Sunni Rashid Caliph. Also, according to Shiite belief, buried next to Ali ibn Abi Talib within this mosque are the remains of Adam and Nuh (Noah)..<<CONTINUE READING>>
