Residents at the scene expressed fears that some students might have perished in the accident as rescue operations got underway.

An Easy Coach bus ferrying students from Chavakali Boys High School to Nairobi has been involved in an accident along the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway. The Monday, April 1, evening accident happened next to the Coptic Church roundabout near Mamboleo in Kisumu.

A student at the scene said they had closed school and had boarded the bus from school heading to Nairobi. Videos from the scene show a crowd milling around as they try to pull the students from the overturned bus.

Residents at the scene have expressed fears that some of the students may be dead but are hoping for the best outcome as they continue with rescue operations.

There is also growing fear that the vehicle might catch fire as it continues to leak fuel while the locals try to retrieve the learners.

The accident comes a few days after a wave of sorrow swept through the Kenyatta University community following a tragic accident that left 11 students dead and several others injured along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.

The incident occurred on Monday evening, March 18, in the Maungu area in Voi when a trailer hit their bus on the left side. When the accident occurred, the school bus was carrying public health students heading to Mombasa for an academic trip.

Eleven students died in the accident, while several were seriously injured and were quickly rushed to Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi for treatment.

Recently, NTSA suspended the licences of Smart Highways Sacco Limited and Bungoma Line. Safari Limited over failure to comply with set regulations.

They defended their move, explaining that the two popular Saccos failed to comply with provisions of Section 5 of the NTSA regulations and speed violations.

The authority maintained that before, the Saccos would be allowed back on Kenyan roads after they complied with set directives, including inspection to test roadworthiness.
