Reports had earlier alleged that President William Ruto had nominated Caroline Mwende Mueke to take up that position after he nominated Peter Mathuki to take up the ambassadorial role.

However, in a new turn of events, the Head of State has presented the name of Veronica Mueni Nduva, Principal Secretary in the Department of Performance and Delivery Management in the Ministry of Public Works, to take up the EAC Secretary General post.

The new developments come as Mwende was preparing to face the EAC members before taking her oath of office later this week. Instead, President Ruto has settled on someone from inside his cabinet circle to occupy that lucrative post.

By the time of this publication, the reason for the withdrawal of Mwende’s candidature had not been revealed by the government.

The holder of the office serves as the mouthpiece of the East African region where he makes formal communication affecting the community and even spells out new policies adopted by the member states.

Kenya has been forced to make changes after Ruto nominated Mathuki as ambassador to Russia.

Since his assumption to office, Mathuki provided strategic leadership and facilitation for new dimensions in the EAC Secretariat; through deepening and the expansion of the Community, with the recent admission of the Democratic Republic of Congo and pursuing peace and security efforts in some troubled parts of the region.
