Van Dijk might be a centre-half by trade, but he’s shown a canny knack in front of goal for the Reds. The 31-year-old has 17 goals in 196 games for Jurgen Klopp’s side and memorably netted on debut against Everton in 2018.

However, the Dutchman’s touch in front of goal deserted him towards half-time at the City Ground as he squandered a huge chance to put Liverpool in front.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold on the substitutes bench, James Milner assumed crossing duties on the right-hand side and duly delivered a ball right onto the head of Van Dijk at the far post.

Unmarked, Van Dijk had the freedom of the City of Nottingham. But for some reason, he decided to try and head the ball back across goal rather than test Dean Henderson himself.

In the end the defender did neither as his header back across the six-yard box missed the on-rushing Roberto Firmino and went out of play for a goal kick.

It didn’t take long before rival fans jumped on Van Dijk’s indecision, with some labelling it as “class defending” – on behalf of Forest.

One person asked: “Did Van Dijk think he was defending instead of attacking.” Someone else added: “Van Dijk forgot which side he’s defending for!”

A third person wrote: “Van Dijk thought he was defending, what was that header? Lol.” Another user echoed that statement, writing: “Class defending from Virgil in the oppositions box.”

Others continued on the same theme, including one who wrote: “Why didn’t Van Dijk shoot my God.” While someone else questioned: “What in the world was that from Van Dijk?”

Van Dijk’s miss proved costly as the sides entered the break locked together at 0-0.
