A few days ago, there was a serious pandemonium around the Ikot Ansa axis of Calabar metropolis, as some students of Estate Secondary school and Government College both of Ikot Ansa, Calabar, engaged in a serious fight leading to the injury of many.
According to a report on The Parchment ( a news media in Cross River State), the disagreement happened as an outcome of a football match between both schools, which shares the same compound. It was also gathered that students from both schools freely used dangerous weapons on each other.
And one might be forced to ask why a school will give students the freedom to use any weapon of their choice.
The fight became so serious that residents and passersby took to their hills for safety. If secondary school students can cause such pandemonium, I am wondering what will become of them in the future if nothing is done.
Aside from these schools, the issue of cultism in secondary schools has become a major security challenge in the country. Secondary school students now see cultism as a norm in society, thereby inflicting pain on their fellow students and other people around them.
I think there is every need for the government to pay much attention to this issue because if it is not curtailed, the country will continue to inhabit youths that would cause a nuisance in the society.
Recall that some days ago, the Edo state police command also announced the arrest of over 49 secondary school students over a cult clash.
It is high time, the government put up stringent measures in secondary schools to abate this growing time bomb that we may not be able to contend with if it explodes.
