The defensive minded midfielder and the West Londoners started talking last year, but negotiations came to an end when the ownership of the London based outfit changed to a group headed by Todd Boehly.

With a verbal agreement from Boehly’s side, The Athletic are now reporting that the veteran midfielder is holding out for a lengthier contract than the two-year offer currently on the table, with an option for a third year.

Kante joined the Blues from the Foxes in 2016 and has since been an integral part of the team, helping them win the League title, the UCL, and the Club World Cup while he was based in London.

The 31-year-old has established himself as one of the top midfielders in the world, but if talks with Premier League heavyweights doesn’t materialise, he may be forced to depart for nothing.

In August, Sportsmail claimed that Paris Saint-Germain were monitoring Kante’s contract situation in an effort to reacquaint him with French club football for the first time since 2015.

The Athletic also adds that the France international would attract interest from teams in Bundesliga and the La Liga as well as two English clubs.

Thomas Tuchel, who was later fired by the hierachy, has previously spoken out about Kante’s persistent injury issues. The midfielder is currently sidelined till the end of September after suffering an injury against Antonio Conte’s Spurs.

Despite playing in only two games this season, he had excellent performances against Everton on the road and against Spurs at Stamford Bridge.
