When it appears on the lips, it resembles a persistent crusting ulcer that does not heal and expands slowly. Other signs and symptoms include trouble swallowing, new lumps or bumps in the neck, swelling in the mouth, and numbness in the mouth or lips.

Men have twice the risk of developing oral cancer as women, according to the American Cancer Society, with men over 50 having the highest risk. In both African Americans and white males and females, the rate of development of oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer began to fall in the late 1970s and continued to decline into the 1990s.

To lower your chance of mouth cancer, stay away from the five items listed below.

1. Excessive smoking.

Tobacco smoking is one of the leading causes of head and neck malignancies, including cancers of the oral cavity and oropharynx. People who smoke have a considerably increased chance of developing certain malignancies than those who do not. The vast majority of patients who develop these cancers have a history of smoking or other tobacco use, such as chewing tobacco.

The higher your risk, the more you smoke. Cigarette, pipe, and cigar smoke all raise your chances of developing these malignancies. Long-term exposure to secondhand smoking has also been linked to an increased risk of certain malignancies in some studies, although more study is needed to confirm this. Pipe smoking has been related to a significantly increased risk of cancer in the area of the lips that touches the pipe stem.

2. Exposure to Human papillomavirus (HPV).

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus family that includes over 150 different kinds. Because some of them generate a form of development known as a papilloma or wart, they’re called papillomaviruses.

Certain strains of HPV infection can result in cancer, including malignancies of the mouth and throat. HPV type 16 (HPV16) is the kind most frequently connected to oropharyngeal cancer, particularly cancers of the tonsil and base of tongue. HPV DNA (a indication of HPV infection) is discovered in approximately two-thirds of oropharyngeal malignancies and a significantly lesser percentage of oral cavity cancers.

3. Being obese and overweight.

Too much body weight tends to raise the risk of oropharyngeal and laryngeal malignancies. People who eat more plant-based foods, such as nonstarchy vegetables and whole fruit, may lose weight and have a lower risk of oropharyngeal and laryngeal cancer as a result of poor nutrition.

4. Poor nutrition.

A diet deficient in fruits and vegetables has been related to an elevated risk of oral cavity and oropharyngeal malignancies in several studies.

5. Too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light.

For most people, the main source of UV light is sunlight. People who work outside and are exposed to sunlight for lengthy periods of time are more likely to develop lip cancer.
